NAIDOC Week Message 8-15 July 2018
His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd)
The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week – Because of Her, We Can! – celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, culture and achievements.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play an important role in our community as leaders, advocates, protectors and carriers of dreaming stories, songlines, language and knowledge. In passing ancestral culture on to the next generation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have safeguarded the world’s oldest continuing culture and continue to enrich our nation and our community here in New South Wales.
Please join me as we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women – Elders, leaders, mothers, aunties, sisters and daughters.
During NAIDOC Week, we also welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from around the nation to Sydney for the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony to be held on Gadigal land on Friday 13th July.
Linda and I congratulate all award winners and nominees for these prestigious awards.
