Government House, Sydney
Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales

In my Australia Day address this year I said that in the community’s response to drought and bushfires ‘We had seen the best of Australians’ and that we needed ‘to continue to be the best of Australians’.

At that time we were hoping for rain, which came, but we also keenly understood the need for ongoing support for our drought and bushfire-affected towns and regions.  Whilst the need for that support hasn’t diminished, I doubt that any of us anticipated the added challenges that we now face with the rapid spread of COVID-19.

It is essential that we all continue to work together and follow the Government’s advice and that of NSW Health as to what we must do to reduce and hopefully arrest the spread of the virus.

This is a time to be moderate and considerate. There is no need for panic. The shops are open and household goods need to be available for everyone.

I also want to thank our State’s health professionals and service personnel who are carrying a huge burden in dealing with the virus. And in our own way, so is each and everyone of us.

So, take care of yourselves, be sensible and responsible, and look out for the most vulnerable members of our community.

At Government House - advice at 23 March 2020

As a part of our response to COVID-19, Government House has taken a series of steps.

The Governor’s programme will ensure that her Constitutional duties are fulfilled.

Consistent with Government advice regarding public gatherings, the Australia Day Honours List Investiture Ceremonies planned for May have been postponed.

Government house is closed to the public. Our award-winning Virtual Tour is available online.

Many aspects of our work at Government House will continue as normal, including the care and conservation of our heritage site and the provision of support to patronage and other community organisations.

Connect to our website and social media channels for advice as to any changes to the Governor’s programme and to follow stories of Government House and our work to preserve its heritage.
