The Governor and Mr Dennis Wilson spent four days in the Murray Border region learning more about the Indigenous history, the vibrant art, enterprising culture and living heritage of Albury, Howlong and Corowa, through the eyes of members of the community, including Council, business and community organisations.
The Governor, and the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, created history in the NSW Murray border and ‘Federation’ town of Corowa, coming together to celebrate the culmination of the 50th Anniversary Year of the Australian Honours System, in the presence of 60 local NSW and Victorian recipients of Australian Honours and Awards.
The celebration also marked the 20th Anniversary of the “official proclamation” of the Black-Allan Line, the 172km ‘straight line border section’, from the source of the Murray to Cape Howe on the coast. The “official proclamation” was jointly made by Governor Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO and her counterpart, Governor John Landy AC CVO MBE in 2006 to commemorate Alexander Black and Alexander Allan's 1870-71 geodetic survey.
The Governor and Mr Wilson also honoured 75 years of National Service during a commemorative service at Albury's Memorial Garden.
